Today, I’m almost 12 weeks postpartum at 43 after 3 years of TTC. Being over 40 isn’t too old to have a baby!

Q: How is motherhood going?
A: I silently said to myself I don’t even feel like a mother. Before my son, people called me a mother after my pregnancy losses which I never felt. No judgement to any woman that call themselves a mother after pregnancy loss... I just never felt that way. Then after my son was born, for the first month or so, I felt like just a caretaker and not a mother, yet I yearned to feel like other women that called themselves a mother on the internet.

When making an appointment one day, the other person on the other end asked me if this was ‘Carver’s Mom,’ and I immediately said yes. That brought a huge smile to my face, but I still didn’t feel THAT feeling. Later, my husband continually said that the baby stopped crying when I picked him up. I completely blew it off thinking he was just trying to make me feel better. Then, I started to pay attention and sure enough, the baby stopped crying when I would pick him up. Ha! I had an easier time soothing him than others and my husband. That was the magical moment I finally started feeling like a mother.

Two years ago today, I published the first episode of Over 40 Fabulous and Pregnant Podcast! 🥳

While I’m almost 12 weeks postpartum, we have over 90 episodes of women’s pregnancy stories from age 40 to 57 and discuss a handful of topics like donor egg conception, single mother by choice, pregnancy loss, embryo adoption and more. It’s taken me a little longer to get back in the swing of things with my little one, but enjoy episodes wherever you listen to podcasts.

Q: How’s breastfeeding going? A: We are on our second lactation consultant, seeing a baby chiropractor and have an appointment with the pediatric dentist next week to look at correcting his lip and tongue tie. He seemed to have an amazing latch the day he was born but now in the last two days it’s not as strong. His ties are causing him to not efficiently get the milk out of my breast and it is causing me pain and supply issues. Let me tell you-OUCH! (I’ve never moved so fast to get him off!!) We continue to work on mouth stretches, his reflexes, and I’ve been pumping every two hours to work on increasing my supply and doing more bottles.

Why not just exclusively pump, someone asked? There’s nothing wrong with exclusively breastfeeding, but if the ties aren’t corrected, the lactation consultant told us there’s research linking ties to sinus issues, sleep apnea, ear tubes, allergies and more later in life. I wanted to be confident in our decision to see the dentist, so I wanted to know how he could be affected later in life if we didn’t correct the ties now. (no one likes fear based information!) EVERY issue was describing what my husband has dealt with.

I’m hoping all is better after next week’s appointment. 🙏🏻 🤞🏼

He is HERE!! I finally gave birth to our baby boy

He is HERE!! I finally gave birth to our baby boy on Monday, July 22nd weighing 9lbs 8oz. I was 41 weeks 3 days. I can’t wait to share all of the details soon because almost nothing happened according to my birth plan.

I was induced the night before with an epidural. The next night, I pushed for 2 hours. Once he was out, the cord was quickly cut because his color and lungs needed to be checked. I was laying there filled with relief, joy and just a little out of it. He tried to come with one hand first that cause a little tear. I hemorrhaged losing about a liter of blood.

We are home and our baby is over week old which is so hard to believe. The 4th trimester is already harder than expected but feel incredibly lucky. #43andpregnant #over40andpregnant #donoreggjourney

It’s a great show where @mcrjenplath10 , @james82_ and I discuss our pregnancy after loss. The goal of the show is to help normalize loss over 40 but not to define it. The ECV was successful and nothing what I had expe

The ECV was successful and nothing what I had expected. Baby is head down! 🎉

I expected to have an epidural. I read that the procedure takes about 2 minutes, so I expected 5 minutes. I also thought it had to be done in the OR in case baby was stressed and go straight to a c-section. I really built this procedure up in my head.

I wasn’t supposed to eat 8 hours before the procedure and had an IV put in. The MFM, my husband, Emily my doula, 2 midwives and myself were in a room with a sonogram machine. The MFM told us the risks and looked at baby’s position. Baby was still breech. Once we began, I was laid down flat on my back and my belly lathered with gel. The MFM got started by pushing intensely with both hands. After about 12 seconds he stopped. He was done. No one had time to take a picture. The baby is now head down. I was moved and put back on monitors to make sure the baby wasn’t stressed by the procedure. I had a few contractions but baby was great. We were there almost 6 hours for a 12 second procedure. The midwives and the doula were amazed how quick the procedure went. Now we wait for labor to start…

🎧 Podcast Day: We have two returning guests on to discuss pregnancy after loss over 40. The goal of this show is to share our experiences and normalize loss over 40 because loss is a part of so many of our journeys and we are not alone. We have returning guest from episode 48, Jamey. Jamey had a 10-year IVF journey that included two miscarriages and many other losses along the way to her pregnancy at 41 with her daughter using embryo adoption. Jenna, from episode 44 had four daughters with four losses before her fifth daughter at 43.

*NOTE: this is the last show before I go on maternity leave. I’ll be posting and giving updates on the podcast from time to time, just not regular episodes. ✌🏻

The c-section was insanely intense as Alice describes it. Her husband had to stay outside of the room to begin with. The room looked like what you’d see on TV shows, the old fashioned kind of surgical rooms with bare bricks on the wall. It was a strange old room considering the hospital was quite new. There were loads of people in there. There was a real sense handing over trust to either nature or in this instance, people with needles. She remembers one of the guys holding her hand before it started. They told her what was going on as things happened. She was terrified because she didn’t know who these people that were putting needles into her body almost immediately. It was of scary. She did a lot of hypnobirthing in her previous births, so she leaned on that in the room to help calm her. She sat with the weird symptoms she got with the medications. There was a lot of tugging. It felt like someone was pulling her ribs out, but it wasn’t painful. A few minutes later was when she heard the cry. They lifted her baby up as she tried to reach for him. She and her husband both burst into tears. It was the most beautiful experience.

At 44, Alice was hoping to have a spontaneously labor at home in a birth pool. In the end, she had a c-section by choice, and one she never thought she’d make. Pregnancy was already becoming incredibly stressful at the end. She was in and out of hospital for the last couple of weeks, almost daily for different appointments and checkups. Labor just wasn’t happening. The last thing she wanted was everyone in her family to be exhausted with her. It wasn’t just about prioritizing herself in the way that she had the privilege to do when she was younger. She was already over 40 weeks by five days. The induction process was traumatic for her last time, so that wasn’t an option she wanted to explore. There was something in her that just suddenly said no and asked for a c-section.

Alice said her pregnancy was really hard at 44. She felt sick the whole time. It felt a lot more intense than the others. She had to get really ridiculously hungry and eat and eat and then she felt so sick. She couldn’t even eat chocolate. Towards the end, she could barely walk anywhere. She felt exhausted and tired. Alice says her exercise went out the window. She kept thinking throughout the pregnancy that once this sickness is gone, she was going to do a bit of exercise. Once the sickness had gone, she just felt shattered and so tired. Alice didn’t have any food cravings, but she craved reading fiction books.

She wanted to take pleasure in the pregnancy, but it was hard at the end. Her baby was breeched for a long time, so that was uncomfortable. When he wasn’t breech, he’d lay in a weird sideways position, which really tugged on her ribs.

Alice’s journey to pregnancy started at 33. She

Alice’s journey to pregnancy started at 33. She gave way to a more mature version of herself that wanted to have a family. She started trying for her first child which she felt her daughter’s energy was around her for a long time before she was pregnant. She was doing a course in shamanic and magical things. She felt the energy of her pregnancy within her and she was. That first pregnancy was epic.

She thought for a long time she would just have the one. She again felt that little niggling that somebody else wants to come through. She stopped taking precautions and waited. Not much later, she fell pregnant with her second daughter which was a very different experience. It was a very tough pregnancy but wonderful birth.

At 44, with her two daughters, she was moving on with her life. She assumed she was perimenopausal. Her cycles had shifted and changed quite a bit to being much shorter. She wasn’t taking any precautions with her husband to prevent pregnancy. Alice was happy with her two girls. She had been very ill over Christmas holiday. She thought the illness had sent her cycle off a bit off. She was in bed sick for two weeks. She didn’t think she was pregnant until one day, she said to her husband that she might be pregnant. She could see the two positive lines. Her husband couldn’t see the second line, so he went back out and got another test that showed a very definite positive result. Alice was shocked.

Kerra picked up breakfast on the way to work when

Kerra picked up breakfast on the way to work when she was 40 weeks, her due date. Her total at the shop was $7.77. She knew it was going to be a great day. The first contraction started the minute she got out of a meeting at 8:00 pm that night. Five minutes later, she had another one. Contractions grew stronger throughout the day and she tried to finish everything up because she knew she wasn’t coming back. She texted her midwife when contractions were five minutes apart while she was on the way to get ice cream. Kerra assumed the midwife would be on her way, but she told Kerra to keep her updated. Kerra got home to an empty house because the other boys were with their dad. She relaxed by sitting on the yoga ball and listened to worship music while to labored. Her midwife arrived at her house about 11:00 pm. Kerra knew she was getting close to transition, and she was right. She was eight centimeters when the midwife checked at 11:30 pm. She transitioned while she was on her knees leaning her head on the bed. The midwife told her to push when she was ready about midnight. She didn’t push for long. Once the baby’s head came out, the midwife told her to stop pushing. The cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. Once the midwife got the cord unwrapped, she says she pushed with everything she had to get his shoulder’s out. Then the midwife helped her pulled her baby to her, and they sat there and cried tears of joys. It was everything she had wanted in a home birth. She did skin to skin until the placenta was birthed. She didn’t feel like ice cream after that. She had steak instead.

Kerra says she’s been on a slow journey to going

Kerra says she’s been on a slow journey to going to more and more natural births. Her ex-husband didn’t approve of a midwife, so she thought this is her chance to have a midwife and a home birth she always wanted. She found a midwife that was 45 minutes away, and her current husband approved. It made her a little nervous being that far away because her last birth came so quickly while she was still in a wheelchair. It was a really great experience. It was a different type of care from all of her other experiences. She enjoyed having all kids experience the home appointments with her.

At 42, Kerra felt really good during her pregnancy. Strong food-aversion were something unique to this pregnancy that lasted the whole time. Coffee made her nauseous, and she couldn’t eat or smell fruit until she was 3-months postpartum. She didn’t have morning sickness. She was just nauseous all the time with smells and even the fruity lotions would make her sick. Being in the grocery store, with all the smells didn’t make her feel well. She said she was going to exercise because it helped with her last pregnancy eight years ago, but she didn’t. She wasn’t more tired at 42 than any of her other pregnancies. Kerra worked twice a week until she went into labor at work.

While they dated, Kerra felt in her spirit that they would have kids, but she assumed they would adopt. They dated less than a year when they got married when she was 41. After they got married, she looked into adoption and did training on it. She knew it was God telling her they were going to have at least a child together. She asked her new husband if he would be open to medical interventions that could possibly increase his fertility, but he said no immediately. The first couple of months they were married, pregnancy was always in the back of her mind. She believed it was possible she could get pregnant. After a few months, she stopped thinking about it. Four months later, she remembers being at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens with her mom and girlfriend, and thought she was starting her cycle because she was spotting. It ended up not being anything. Kerra got home that night and she thought that was weird because the only other time that happened was when she was pregnant. Her cycle was two weeks late. She had to go get a test, but she didn’t tell her husband yet. The next day she bought a pregnancy test, and it was positive. She waited for him to get home, but he brought his nieces and nephew with him. She wanted to tell him in private, so now she to had to wait until they left. When they were finally alone on the sofa, she told him she bought something for him at the store. She told him it is a pregnancy test when he couldn’t guess what it was. The look on his face told her he was very confused. When he finally understood, he asked her if she took it. She told him she did and the results. She watched her husband go through all of the emotions from complete shock, to laughing, to denial, and assuming it was a COVID test. He cried tears of joy when he finally realized Kerra was really pregnant. They stayed up talking all night about it.
